THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER

This story is about the two boys who lived the lives of each other.
The boy named Tom Kanty lives in the poor district of London – “the yard of garbage”. One day he steals a man’s wallet. The man notices it and runs after him. Tom, running away from the man climbs over the fence & finds himself in the Royal garden. The king is there. He begins mocking Tom & orders the guard to run after him and to beat him. Tom starts running away from them...
This time a prince of Wells is choosing clothes for the fancy-dress ball. He likes nothing. Tom, running from the guard creeps into a flue & finds himself in the prince’s room. The prince & Tom speak to each other & realize that they are as like as two peas. The prince understands that the clothes of a pauper fit perfectly for the fancy-dress ball. They exchange their clothes but the prince retains a Royal jewelry. Then the prince goes to his father – the King to show his clothes for the fancy-dress ball but the king thinks that he is the real pauper who was in the garden & orders the guard to turn “the pauper” out of the palace.
When the prince is outside, he cries that he is the prince but everybody laughs at him. Then he shows the Royal jewelry to prove he is the prince. A man from a crowd drags a knife to take the Royal jewelry from “the pauper” but another man from the crowd named Miles Handon protects “the pauper” and takes him to his house. “The pauper” says permanently that he is the prince & Miles thinks he is crazy...
Tom has to go to the fancy-dress ball. Before the ball he tries to run away through the flue, so he is dirty. Everybody thinks that “the prince” is in the dress of a pauper & says that he is very witty.
Next morning Miles takes “Tom” to his house in “the yard of garbage”. The father says to “Tom” that he was to be at home the day before & bring five shillings by supper & wants to beat him with a knout but Miles prevents him & they fight...
Next day Tom continues saying that he is not the prince, he is the a pauper & everybody in the palace is sure “the prince” is crazy. The king is very ill. He calls “the prince” & says that he must go to a Dinner instead of him & everybody must think that he is not crazy & can be a king. So the king dies & the prince is king now & he must be crowned...
Miles & “the pauper” come to the city where Miles lived before he went to the military service. The woman whom he loves is to wait for him (Edit) & his brother is to run his fortunate (Hue) until Miles comes back. When they come into his house, everybody says that he is pretender & that Miles died 3 years before & they found out that Edit is Hue’s wife. Hue orders to take Miles to a town square & beat him. At night Edit comes to the square & frees him & she explains him everything: 3 years ago they received a letter where there was written that Miles had died (of course it was forged), now Hue is very powerful & everybody in the town is afraid of him. So when Miles was coming to the town, Hue saw him & ordered everybody to simulate that they do not recognize him. She married Hue because he paid all the debts of her family. After this, Miles understands that “the pauper” is not crazy, he is the real king.
Hue & Edit go to the coronation of the monarch. Miles & king Edward attack their couch, knot Hue & Miles puts on his clothes. They come into the palace & the real king is crowned.
Tom becomes a chairman. Miles & Edit get married. Hew made a good career of politician abroad.
This story shows us what social status means in society. If you are rich & wear rich clothes everybody respects you, but if you are poor nobody will respect you & they will mock you because poor people is people from “the yard of garbage” for rich people.
